Man fatally stabbed near Vancouver's Granville Street in 25th homicide of 2025

Vancouver police are investigating a fatal stabbing that took place Monday afternoon near the intersection of Granville and Helmcken streets, in the heart of the city’s bustling Granville Entertainment District. According to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), officers were called to the scene at approximately 3:15 p.m. PT after paramedics responded to reports of a person in medical distress.

VPD Sgt. Steve Addison told CBC News that when paramedics arrived, it became apparent that the individual’s injuries may have been the result of a crime, prompting them to request police assistance. The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his stab wounds. Authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the incident.

Sgt. Addison explained that the victim had no identification on him at the time of his death, which has complicated efforts to confirm his identity. “We’re having to work back to identify him through other means,” Addison said. “And I’m confident that we will be able to do that, but it’s just taking a little bit longer than it normally would.”

Police also indicated that they do not believe the fatal stabbing was a random act of violence or entirely unprovoked. According to Addison, there was a “prior interaction” between the victim and the assailant, though investigators have not yet determined the nature of their relationship. “But what their relationship was, whether they knew each other or how well they knew each other, is something that we’re yet to confirm,” he said.

The crime occurred in a busy area of downtown Vancouver, which is known for its nightlife and high foot traffic. “Lots of people around, lots of sources of evidence, including the obvious video cameras from businesses, people on the street,” Addison said. “And without getting into specifics about the evidence that we’ve secured, I can tell you that we’re looking at all of that.” Authorities are carefully reviewing available surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses in hopes of identifying the perpetrator.

This stabbing marks Vancouver’s 25th homicide of the year, underscoring ongoing concerns about violent crime in the city. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact the VPD to assist with the investigation.

The department has not released further details about the suspect or any potential motives, emphasizing that the investigation remains active. Community members and business owners in the area have expressed shock at the violence, particularly given the location’s normally busy and public setting. Authorities say they are working diligently to gather all available evidence and identify both the victim and the individual responsible.

As Vancouver grapples with another homicide, city officials continue to emphasize public safety and community engagement in addressing violent crime. Police reiterate that anyone with knowledge of the incident or relevant information should reach out immediately to assist with the ongoing investigation.
